Mental Fitness® vs Mental Health
(@ 1997-2001, by Dr Yanina Shapiro)
Like most of our clients, you have probably never
heard of Mental Fitness® and wonder whether
and how it differs from "Mental Health".
In short, Mental Fitness®
is the opposite of what has come to be known as Mental Health and what
is really a misnomer. "Mental Health" is all about prescriptive cures
for mental illness and about testing, diagnosing, and labeling the UN-Healthy
mind. "Mental Health" is the health achieved through such medical means
as psychoactive drugs, psychotherapy, electrical shock, neurosurgery
or a combination thereof.
Please note that, quite unlike clinical psychologists
and other mental health professionals, medical doctors never call healthy
people "patients". Healthy people take vitamins rather than medicine
and go to the gym rather than to a physical therapist. Healthy people
do not go to doctors or hospitals or physical therapists until and unless
they become un-well. And to prevent becoming un-well, healthy people
do not take medicine, but work on staying healthy, and on becoming healthier.
They exercise, they eat properly, and sleep well. Well this is what
Mental Fitness® is about - work, on preventing
mental health problems and improving one's cognitive powers.
Mental Fitness® is about
Your Own Effort, about the Work You Do to Prevent your Mind from ever
Needing the help of Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, clinical
psychologists, therapists, psychoanalysts, etc.), the folks who are
in the business of diagnosing and treating minds via therapy an other
medical means.
Even the best fit minds are sometimes overwhelmed
with the problems of today. At such times a personal Mental Fitness®
Trainer/Coach could help. And so s/he could in tuning up your memory,
risk taking, and decision making skills.
